What he said.
Really looking forward to the gig and the album and I will buy the single,
it will give me a reason to fix my turntable which has also gone west (all
it needs is a new stylus... £90.... glarg!)
And I am very grateful for all your updates Chris. Sometimes unofficial
band websites / mailing lists can get a bit picky and negative - happens
quite a bit on the Fall forum! It's the nature of online things, if people
are content they don't say anything, but when people are motivated to moan
they do so. If that make sense.

Don't be downhearted Chris - if people are grumpy it's just because
they're so keen to hear the new stuff. My turntable's gone west so
vinyl's no good to me either but never mind - it will be one of those
songs that I only hear at gigs!
Looking forward to the gig and album!

Here's my tuppence worth...
Altitude was released in 2006, 6 years after Cavaliers. I became
involved with the band in August 2006 when we started laying down the
first tracks of what would eventually become Anti-gravity. I was not
involved with the band at all between 2000 and 2006. I'm sure Altitude was
almost complete at various points during these 6 years and probably had
about 12 different titles during this time. This is quite simply the way
Gerard does things. The difference now is that since 2006 I've tried to
develop communications between the band and their incredibly loyal fan
base (although some of you sound like you're wavering a bit!) by
overhauling the website, updating the myspace and starting a facebook
group. As a fan of the band since 1986 I thought I would use my privileged
position to update everyone with the kind of information I would have
liked to have received during the 6 years of near silence. With hindsight
it may have been better not to post so many "here's the latest" posts on
this newsgroup. Gerard does things his way. He will never be rushed into
anything. He often changes his mind - usually for the better. The
difference this time is that you've all been in on it. Most of you are
bored of waiting for a new album. I feel partly responsible for this. It
would probably have been better to have heard nothing for a couple of
years and them just suddenly put it out.
These are exciting times again for The Blue Aeroplanes. The album is
finished. You've heard that before but I can assure you Gerard sounds more
convinced than at any time since I've been involved. It's just a matter of
working out the best way to release it. I thought there would be a much
more positive reaction to the news about The Fleece. It's a big deal.
Owning The Fleece raises the profile of the band and having a "band-run"
venue raises the profile of The Fleece.
I'd like to say a massive thank you to Nat Mumford for the hard work
he's put into the single. It's gonna look great from what I've seen... and
it's gonna sound even better!
I know I've said this before but Anti-gravity is a superb album. In my
opinion way better than Altitude and 2 years less in the making. (I'm a
glass-half-full person!)
How about a bit less of the grumpy old men posts and a bit more friendly
banter eh? That's why Lisa gave up and logged off (although having a baby
probably had a bit to do with it too!)
We've got a great line up planned for the launch night so it should be a
night to remember. The first Aero's gig at The fleece since the 90's.
Rodney's in. A few more old favourites awaiting confirmation. We've sold
over 100 tickets already. Rocker DJ-ing. Great support bands (I love The
Paris Riots). There's a real buzz about it in Bristol.
I'm excited. I just wish you lot could be (even a little bit). Maybe
some of you are but you never post. Now's your chance!

I can't speak for the band - I've only really been involved because
i've been helping out in getting the 7" produced. Maybe Chris will have
something to add.
But from where I'm standing - my understanding is that the album is
finished. However, as someone said further down, lots of things have to
happen to a finished recording before it makes it into the shops, and they
all take time.
'Good luck signs' and ''When things are good' are both lyrical
references drawn from this song - China Brilliance Automotive - so my
guess is that at some point, this was intended to be on the album and when
it came off, it no longer made as much sense to have either of those as
the album title.
I think the idea of 7" only was just to make it a bit more
special/noteworthy/commemorative of the Fleece takeover. It's in a fine
tradition of one-off Aeroplanes 7" singles at gigs - Trouble/Stranger, Top
of the Pops (the A House double AA) and in due course you should be able
to get it in your friendly local independent record store as well.
As matthew says, sure it will be collected onto some sort of anthology
eventually. And TBH someone will have pirated it onto the internet before
you can say 'anti-gravity'.
Anyone who can't get hold of it through any of the above means, I will
ring you and sing it down the phone.

Incidentally, just Googled 'China Brilliance Automotive'
(unsurprisingly, it's the name of a Chinese Car Manufacturer!!)....
Here's the link:

p.s. No mention on their web-site of any forthcoming Aeros' releases
on vinyl in the far-east either!! :-)

Oh dear.
I’m all for making a version available for download. FLAC or other
lossless format preferred. Yahboosucks to MP3.

Having read with great interest the various replies to this thread, i
must say that i agree with all of them!!....
Why don't they go with an mp3 download version (via web-site) a la
iTunes @ £5 a hit (on or after the release of the 7" vinyl jobbie?). I'd
even offer to set it up for them (& i'm not a tecchie)...
Likewise, new album??...Mystified to say the least (what happened to
'Good Luck Signs' aka 'When Things Are Good' then? Was it a USA only
(vinyl double-album) release with gatefold sleeve?
I assumed (having heard some new songs played last 2 or 3 times live;
Angela Carter/ 25 Kinds of Love etc.) there was enough material to fill it
(In fact, i recall Gerard & Max telling me 'it's the dogs'!!)...
'Anti-Gravity' sounds like a delay tactic to me?
Sorry to sound negative (but like the Glasgow man)...I only have a
'limited life span' myself & am now wondering if any new product (in a
playable format) will ever grace my turn-table (aka CD player) again.

Further to Phil's harsh but fair description of the apparent business
plan.
I don't think Gerard worries about his fan base moving on but I doubt
if the BAs will be able to establish a new audience (outside of Bristol).

Ah yes, that "forthcoming album" rumour again... Lots of description
and teasing over the last year or two, not very much music (although "25
Kinds of Love" sounded promising). I've rather given up hope of ever
hearing it: I live in Glasgow, so I have a very low life expectancy, you
understand. The Blue Aeroplanes? More like the bleedin' Blue Nile in their
early years.
So, here's the business plan: organise a limited local release of a
single in a format that few people still have access to of an outtake from
an album that isn't even available. Stunning! An entire generation of
potential fans will be rushing out to buy a record player especially.
Granted, album releases get delayed for any number of artistic and
non-artistic reasons, but... but... but... Oh, go on Chris, tell us some
good news!
Goadingly,

Chris has already mentioned that there will be a *brand new*
vinyl-only Aeroplanes single available at the Fleece gig.
The title is 'China Brilliance Automotive' b/w 'My Good Self' - and
here are few more details from Gerard:
"China Brilliance Automotive was written gazing from a Los Angeles
hotel room at a church that looked like a wedding cake with an 80-foot
charity ribbon on the front. or maybe the side. It's about being all
things to one person or one thing to everybody. Neither is likely to
succeed. Musically, it's from the sessions for the forthcoming
'Anti-Gravity' album, but didn't quite make the finished record due to its
resemblance to the early Who drunkenly trying to imitate Santana. Which is
great, obviously, but doesn't sound like anything else on the album, hence
its release as a spiffing stand-alone single.
"The b-side is a psycho-traumatic rendition of inner conflict as might
have been filmed in a spy-movie, and was recorded on a Sony Walkman
cassette recorder. On a boat. With Katie Tomlinson (17) playing violin.
Then we decided to buy a venue and became the owners of The Fleece (&
Firkin for those with long memories) and restore it to its former glory.
So we are playing a celebratory gig at The Fleece on October 2nd at which
this single will be made available for the first time. And if you can find
us, we'll sign it."
We'll share the art just as soon as it's finished...See you all on the
2nd!
