Well, it was a bit Devil's advocate of me, the Zep ticket question, but
almost asked rhetorically.
Me neither !
I had been musing on the sublime nature of Angelo's playing, and some
of the comments about it here, whilst having footage of Page's exhuberant
style on the telly at the same time. The clamour for tickets, by
comparison with our little soirree last week, reminded me of the last time
they hit London as the 'Rock Event of the Year', in '75.
They were PANTS !
This though, spiked the Death pangs of what you refer to as the 'old,
hairy progressive', not '77. Most of the Bands you refer to had truly had
it by'75 and good luck to them. The next lot were already on their way,
it's the normal way in a healthy scene. I was 20 by 1977. I found the
transition fairly seemless. Maclaren and the Pistols had their
moment(Warhol's 15), the tabloids got on it, the Record Companies threw
money at anything with a zip or a stud, for a while, but by the Autumn,
The Jam, and other hard working outfits were objecting to being labelled
as part of the 'punk war'.
Floyd had Produced a Damned album, John Peel was pushing The Fall,
amongst others.
I thought it was pretty cool, myself.
About Plant ,though. He couldn't sing then('75), as opposed to Gerard,
who can, when he want's to, apparently. Saw Plant with Priory of Brion
couple of years back. And some stuff on the telly from the other night.
No, he still can't.
regards

<<I was at that gig and though Plant was pretty good.>>
You must remember that I was 16 when "Anarchy in the UK" was released
- anything old, hairy progressive, slow, over 2 minutes long, or that our
collective big brothers liked, was ruthlessly purged during the punk wars
- maybe we threw the baby out with the bathwater but the purge was
certainly needed - just watch those reruns of early 70s OGWT - and Zep
were pretty much the epitome of all we hated about the musical
establishment.
Over the years I have managed to let back into my life Neil Young,
Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and even some Deep Purple - but I cannot find
anything remotely enjoyable in Zep, although I can see they are good at
what they do, and a hell of a lot better than Wishbone Ash; Rush; Uriah
Heep; Genesis; Yes; Status Quo (the list is endless).
I really would far rather see the Aeroplanes!
Cheers!
