Don't suppose we could cover punting up to the Tyne in the Thekla, a few
serenades riverside ?
I could do the lights and backing vocals.
Yeah, miss you Lisa.

Lisa's moved to Newcastle. She's staying at her parents place for a
while and they have no internet connection and her laptop is in for repair
so she's kind of out of the picture for a while. I'm sure she'll bounce
back soon enough!

Sorry for not saying I love RA's voice, but he wrires great tunes

nice bloke and gave me a beer from the rider. Oh to be young and seeing
them on the Friendloverplane tour again!
As to early/arty compared with pop/big sound, I like both for
different reasons. The sparse ghost town feel of 'Built in a Day' for one
mood and the blow you away dancability of '...And Stones' for another.
I'm not allowed to write songs, I'm a drummer. Well except for the
stuff I co-wrote in Jameson but only Peel seemed to like that.
Any date for Xmas gig, and where's Lisa?

Whoops! For 'bought' read 'brought'.

Well folks. Am I sorry that I bought this up? Frankly no! We all
love this band - period. And it's because we love 'em that we can say this
stuff. And Mark J good point about the LPs prior to Swagger. And Mark Helm
good point about Nick Jacobs. I thought he was great when I first saw the
BAs in '84. OK so they were arty but they weren't shambolic - these people
could really play (and still can!).
I'd love 'em to go back to one long set with John Stapleton
playing tapes 'n stuff in between songs and members swapping instruments.
It's how I remember them at their most creative. In fact my second band's
first gig started out behind a big sheet of plastic with me ranting poetry
- such was the influence ten years later. So consequently I wasn't
enamoured by the so called 'pop' move and line-up changes but hey bands
progress and it's not like they churned out rubbish. Shall I go on..? Nah!
Let's save it for the Xmas gig.
Mark J whereabouts in Shropshire do you live? I'm in Shrewsbury.
Credit to Steve Thomas for setting up this list - thanks fella
it's great fun!

Oh Bugger!
It looks like the bold two who dared to 'come out' about their
true feelings about Rodders' overall contribution to the mighty 'planes
are well and truly in da doghouse innit!
We must remember that the planes were in existance as a great
band well before Swagger 'n Beatsongs. Good albums they both are but they
are also the most straightforward musically - a move away from some of the
more outlandish stuff of previous - folk instruments and all. [Yes - the
word 'folk' would normally make us indie kids run a mile but I think the
planes used such instruments to good effect]. The planes had already given
us four albums before Swagger. At least three of them excellent (I can't
vouch for Bop Art as unfortunately I have never heard it but as I remember
comments on here a good while ago, the general concensus is "don't
bother"?).
I guess I'm lucky insomuch as I first heard the 'planes around
'87/'88 on Radio 1 in the evening with stuff like 'Cowardice and Caprice'
and 'Coats' and was rather taken by them. Jog my memory: was it that
sweetie Janice Long or cuddly Liz Kershaw?!
Anyway, I'm not dissing RA myself, just saying I'm not too hot
on his stuff.
Yours,
Mark J in Shropshire.
Can't write songs for toffee, but not bad on the oche with
three darts!
