Fat Paul`s mobile and Porky`s Two.....

  • Subject: Fat Paul`s mobile and Porky`s Two.....

A worrying story about distribution of "Cavaliers...":
My brother is trying to get hold of a copy of the album for me, but
can`t
make it to the gig, so enquired at "Revoler" record shop, whose owner
always
used to know what was the latest news on the Aeroplanes (I think he knew
Gerard at one point). He imparted the information that he had no
information
because, and I quote, "Fat Paul has lost his mobile". Fat Paul is
apparently
in charge of the album`s distribution.
Can it be that the commercial success or otherwise of this album could
depend upon a corpulent fellow`s grasp of his telephone.....?
We, the fans, demand to know......

Another, entirely unrelated, story. All this talk of hanging with the
planes (and especially of Alex at 19), recalls to me my brief social
experience of the group.
Alex is from the same area of Bristol as me, and was a good friend of a
good friend of mine in his (pre-aeroplanes) youth. The time that I first
met
him at the afore-mentioned friend`s house, the three of us watched the
truely appalling "Porky`s 2" on video, so you can guage our stage of
teenage
from that.
The second time that I met him there, he informed me that his band (The
Coltranes - made up from his school friends - saw them live once, but
their
dodgy singer put me off - drummer, who was a notorious headcase during his
schooldays, now drums for the highly tipped DarkStar) had split up, and
that
he had been drafted in to play guitar live for an established Bristol
group
with an ever shifting line-up. As he was an affable sort of chap, I went
to
see them at the T&C2 (now The Highbury Garage), and spent half an hour
during the support band having a highly confused conversation with him,
because I was under the bizarre impression that the support band WERE the
Blue Aeroplanes, and I couldn`t work out why he wasn`t up on the stage
with
them....(Don`t ask - it`s a long story - long of the telling, and rather
short of the interesting...)
Then he disappeared, reappearing a few minutes later on stage. With the
rest of them. And the music. And the poetry. And nothing else mattered for
a
long, long time. I don`t think I breathed out until the encores (which
included Nick Jacobs joining them for "Severn Beach" and that other song
they sometimes play.....).
I`ve not had more than "Nice gig!" sort of conversations with him since
then, and then not since he left the group. Anyone know what he`s been up
to
since Strangelove split (I`m glad he moved on from Patrick Duff - I`ve got
rather less savory stories about him...) ?
I saw him backing Rodney at Ashton Court a couple of years back, so,
from
what someone on this list said, I presume he will be on Rodney`s solo
album.
Which can only be a good thing. Am I biased, or are all the albums he`s
been
involved with the best ones.....? Just a thought.......

Phill...............
