no point in even arguing there...those cats can't write. period.
i'm talking bout everybody from ELO to badfinger (whom i sorta dig anyhow)
to big star (whom i love & who took the beatles & corrupted it (that's
good!!)) to costello (his records went straight downhill as soon as he
began
making those beatley opuses..."blood & chocolate" his last great gasp) to
blur (ugh) to boring singer/songers like ron sexsmith & elliot smith to
oasis & all other britpop ....

since polemics such as this require the suggested alternative(s), i give
you:

chuck berry ( he taught em all how to write)
bo diddley
little richard (he had to personally show mccartney how to do that scream)
LOVE
any NUGGETS band (ie. chocolate watchband, seeds, et al)
the VELVET UNDERGROUND
dylan
stones
charles wright & the 103rd street watts band
richard hell & the voidoids
patti smith
john cale
jimmy reed
the doors

christ, it could go on & on.....

Okay, I thought that's what you were saying.

No argument there with the Dylan thing - he was *the* one that sparked
things off. But the thing about the Beatles not being innovators - that
wasn't the point, the thing is they were right on the crest of the wave,
(I could say zeitgeist here except I hate that word) and had such a huge
popularising influence. That and they wrote bloody great songs, I don't
care what you say :-)

Let it out, it's Friday afternoon and you're among friends....oh and if
you're talking Oasis then we're on common ground there too...
