It's a shame John didn't get a writing credit on You are loved, then. It's credited as Langley/Allen/Lee.

all-- i really appreciate the thoughtful commentary. as to rodney--jeeze, i hate to beat a dead horse, but i don't think there's any basis for saying anything less than he's an excellent songwriter and singer. and an indispensible aeroplane. if you have a better body of work yourself, please step up. if not, well....

remember--gerard writes little of the music. yes--his lyrics are brilliant and he IS the aeroplanes for all intents and purposes. but his best work (and indeed his great strength) is in collaboration with others. name your favorite aeros song and it's almost a certainty that someone else wrote a fair bit (if not all) of the tune. i personally like greard very much...but there's a reason the aeroplanes have had so many line-up changes over the years. you do the math.

back to the tunes... one of my personal faves is 'you are loved. ' here's a cool little story on that one: i was actually staying with john and his girlfriend jane for a short visit while the group i was in at the time opened for a bunch of UK aeros dates. i remember him playing me the riff on an old acoustic guitar he had. he had just written it. yes--the big guitar line that opens the song is john's. we had all been listening to a lot of the pixies at the time (remember, gil norton produced them, too); and that riff was john's take on a pixies-esque line. anyway, nice memory... i know i promised some fotos--i'll scan a bunch soon. from a ways back during the swagger and beatsongs tours.

cheers,
mark

Sorry Mark, but I gotta agree with Nev. It's not that Rod's songs are that bad, it's that he has a good backing vocals voice, not a lead vocals voice. Maybe more weird instrumentals could break up the albums.

Then again, my favourite BA's guitarist is Nick Jacobs. Aaaah the feedback!

John Langley's drumming is inspirational (i.e. it's his fault that I play drums ), and it's not the Aeros without him and Gerard. But I can't imagine them without Wotjek even though I know such gigs have occured.

I was sorting out some photos this evening when I found one I took
at the Harbourside gig. Seeing it reminded me that I thought I
saw Rodney backstage during the gig and I was fully expecting
him to join the gang for BIMH. Oh well.

In case you you want to see the picture have a look at:

Well he did most if the drumming on 'altitude' (sadly not Raise the roof, would that have had the kick it did live than the wimpy effort we hear on CD if he did?) and did all the recent gigs, and, if I remember from earlier emails the live members of recent gigs are the new 'planes for the next immanent album, so that'll be a yes.
  John is back.
  Thank the Lord!

I think he wrote the tunes to those. I remember Gerard saying once that the
monster riff of Broken and Mended is Rodney's. For what its worth, I'm on
the "yea" side for Rodney. Top songsmith.
