I don't get all the Rod stuff. It's a bit like being part of an
alphabet appreciation thread and some of the people are saying they
don't really like K.
To be honest, I have always found K to be an upstart sort of letter.
Never really necessary but a nice contrast now and again to C and
great support, in words like NECK which without K would just sound
like NEC which is near Birmingham.
Also, K plays a really good guitar. An Eiphone with a Greek E on the
top thing.
So, I say, things are as they are.
Secondly, I am never really convinced by the it was great live you
had to be there argument. The Aeros are guilty of having produced
one of the worst and most easily dispensable live albums. So, it's a
bit rich of them to suggest that love recordings are where it's at.
The criteria for a good live performance are not the same as those of
a good album.
If a new album came with a room full of young women in singlets,
well, there'd be an imeediate thrill of sorts I guess ,but come
dinner itme, how much would they eat. And where would they go when
you took of the BAs and played the new Dylan or an old album of Irish
traditional music.
These things need to be borne in mind.

Please can we have a new album. By a band. Produced.

change but 2 constants must remain in order for it to be the blue
aeroplanes: gerard and rodney.
as to the live show--i've seen them too many times to count (but
haven't seen them since about 1998. there were some great guys in
the band post beatsongs, but that line-up was perhaps the best live
band i've ever seen. subsequent versions of the planes weren't
able to match that, quite (to my mind) and i lost a bit of
interest, pining for the 'good old days."
does anyone know what john langely is up to???

Thinking the Bristol Christmas gig might be a good start if that
all comes about (here's hoping!). But yes, definitely willing to
travel unless they're willing to play Skipton in my field. Free
cucumber sandwiches and tea for all, followed by eccles cakes (hot
or cold). And beer.
Yeah, they should certainly set a date for Skipton, s'meant to be.

Abi,
Everyone is telling the truth; the Aeros are utterly brilliant
live (apart from a horrible gig at the Garage in 98 or 99 - was
anyone else there?). The Aeros' albums are "slow-burners" and
will continue to grow on you over time, but seeing them live is
breathtaking!
All the other posters seem to have overlooked the contribution of
Rodney Allen, so I thought I'd put in a word for the poor love!
His backing vocals (for example on Your Ages - my favourite love
song!) really complement Gerard's spoken word, and a highlight of
any Aeros album is the Rodney Allen song (or songs). You are
guaranteed three minutes of pathetic, angst-ridden, jingly-jangly
indie-pop. From Beatsongs, "Fun" has to be one of the band's best
songs (the acoustic version on the 12-inch single of "Up In A Down
World, released God-knows-when is gorgeous!), and why "Different
Now" failed to make it onto Swagger remains a great mystery!
I saw Rodney solo (at my Freshers ball in 1989!) and had to endure
a whole set of it, which was taking things a bit far (as was the
solo album Happysad - how much Billy Bragg had he been listening
to?!?), but it was interesting that, although Rodders (who,
incidentally, still looks 12 years old!) was unable to appear on
the last tour, the band still played one of his songs!

The truth is that Bagpipe Music is a poem by Louis MacNeice. (Isn't
it?)
Basically Gerald is what W H Auden would have been if he could have
been a rock star and if Christopher Isherwood had played the electric
guitar.

Bagpipe Music is also the title of the Art Objects (previous
incarnation of
the BAs) great album from 1980, I think....has the awesome
'Showing Off to
Impress the Girls' and is as good as anything GL & Co have done
since...

Must agree about Your Ages, absolutely love it. Freshers Ball
1989? I wish I had been born before I was, to have made the most
of them for a longer time. The Louis MacNeice info has now
allowed me to sing along with the actual words rather than just
make loud noises that sound a slightly similar (was great singing
it in the kitchen without the music where it sounded very
strange). Groovy, rock on.

Totally concur with the comment about 'Showing Off To Impress
the Girls'.
First came across it on the 'Weird Shit' cassette, a live
version from before the birth of humanity.
Subsequently spent more than one should aquiring the vinyl 45.
Not sure if that's the version on 'Bagpipe Music', but for me,
bears out Gerards apparent taste for warts an' all recordings,
'cause I don't think the studio version holds a candle to it.
Gonna put it on, right now.
