Unearthed, indeed. I've been meaning to ask whether anybody else has a copy of the original "Weird Shit" cassette. One of the splendid people on this list made me a CD copy a couple of years ago, and it features "Star Below". To my ears it is identical - not a different version, even - and is dated 1996 on the sleeve. Shows how long some of the "new" album has been kicking around. "Up In A Down World" must be a similar vintage, too.

Kate,
Yes, I'm in the States...and it's getting more weird here every day, it seems.

  et al,
I realized about a second (ok maybe a few more - rum and all that) after i pushed the send button that my thesis isn't perfect. Yes, there is Star Below, but why does it sound so "unearthed"? like it was a recording found in someone's attic? from another time? hmmm..maybe something there, maybe not. But enough "analysis" from the likes of me. I'm new to 'em still and don't feel like I've earned the right. I'd rather just enjoy...

Received the Yr Own World EP, Rough Music, and Cavaliers over the week-end. Question to the BA Sages out there - are all of the EP singles different from the album versions? I figured I'd get Yr Own World for the xtras...then pop it in and hear a diff. version than on Beatsongs! I haven't even made it to the xtras yet, just keep replaying the title song - the intro, richer sound, the slightly diff. "until then" sign-off at the end. Magic!

Can anyone prepare me for Cavs?

Tomorrow morning, drive to work, Rough Music...yes.

Current inventory (in order of aquis.):
  Swagger
  Beatsongs
  Tolerance
  Sugared-Almond EP
  Altitude
  Life Model
  Detective Song EP
  Yr Own World EP
  Rough Music
  Cavaliers

  more to come...

SOS..lyrics needed. Web site lacking here...(group hug)

Hey All,
I wanted this to be a reply to a reply, but not sure how - still rather new to this. And pride is something I lost long ago, so...

So everyone's spinning Altitude, then? I wasn't quite sure what to expect, having only started listening to them two months ago. But I was glad for it. An aside - man, I just can't listen to anything else right now! I try breaking it up, today put in some Kitchens of Distinction for a few songs. Then ejected, put in Detective Song and rawked! Mood changed - up!

Anyway, at first listen I liked Altitude, realizing that many moons had passed since Beatsongs (the "latest" cd I had at that time). I wasn't expecting Beatsongs 2. A couple of tracks stood out. A few spins later and songs like Bright Star Catalogue, Beautiful Is (As...) took shape for these ears. Multinational almost gets as intimate as Honey I (almost). My humble thoughts: In Gerard's delivery, vibe, perspective, whatever - different from the other albums I've heard. Jaded? Weary? Not a lot of the infectious world-wonder that comes through the speakers on Colour Me, Sixth Continent, Arriving, too many to name...I guess none of us are getting younger (sigh). Albums like Swagger lift us up - a spring in my step! It's no small feat memorizing and singing Jacket Hangs but, man, is it fun! Altitude does have plenty of moments, however dark or distant. Yeah, just remembered something re: perspective on this cd. Right, in the past he seems to view mostly from, well, above (planes, etc.) - maps below, the redrawing of borders, freedom of flight - basically a worldview from above. He's up and so are we, along for the ride, beside. Altitude seems to be more terrestrial, rooted, views from the ground up to the sky, trees, distant stars. Like he's "grounded," maybe that's the feeling i get from it. I swear, it all sounded better to me on the way to work the other day! And no, I haven't been drinking (much). Sorry if I'm over-analyzing...

BTW: does Colour Me make anyone else weepy? smiley weepy, though, not sad. that breathe/exclamation near the end - who hasn't felt that way? That's the stuff. Genius...

Good night...

"Colour Me" makes me weepy.
It's one of my favorites.
So is "Tolerance"

Welcome to the list - glad you discovered the 'Planes!
Refresh my memory, are you in the States?
Kate

Loved your analysis, WM ! Myself, I over-analyze everything
except music. It might sound dumb, but I've never thought of
themes in Aeroplanes albums. But now you say it, flight and
perspective are staring me in the face. So you take the
title of 'Altitude' as a bit of red herring ? It certainly
does strike me as a 'down to earth' album in parts; parks
and cities, etc. The plane on the cover is clearly
descending, or losing altitude. But there are two 'stars' in
the track listings, a 'high' and an 'up'. In conclusion, I'd
like to say it's their most balance album, but I don't think
it is. I've lived with it a month now and haven't fallen in
love with songs as I have before.
