I was a radio show producer in Chicago in 1994 at 97.9
FM The Loop. It was one of my proudest moments to have
booked the Blue Aeroplanes on our overnight show. They
had just come from a gig at Chicago's Doubledoor
Lounge. Gerard came to the station along with a new
guitar player who had just joined the band. That night
we were treated to acoustic renditions of "Your own
World" and "Detective
Song". I remember just sitting there watching Gerard
with his fifth of whiskey and thinking that "This guy
is such a fucking Rock Star!" Due to difficult
circumstances, I've since lost most of my radio
archives, I'm praying that i still might have that
tape somewhere. What I do know for certain is that i
sent a DAT of the acoustic performance to the rep at
the record label. I have to look through my rolodex to
try and remember his name. It could be that he may
still have it. Its ashame that they never really
caught on in the States. Music way-too over researched
and pigeon holed into formats here. I'm afraid that
most American music directors didn't know what to make
of them. I was even scolded by our own PD for even
having them on. But i was subversive that way. I
beleive we were The only big market station in the
states that the Aeroplanes ever appeared on. By the
way, i had first caught these guys opening for The
Church during the Swagger tour. The gig was at The
Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia. It was a
transcendant moment. Cheers All!
