Gerard!

  • Subject: Gerard!

I was in Totterdown Tesco Express but just an hour ago, queuing up to pay
for my stuff, not really paying attention to anything, thinking of my
impending cycling holiday, when the bloke behind me sort of leans round
and peers at me. What the f-? I think. Then comes a tap on my shoulder,
and I turn my head to be presented with the be-shaded, florid, moon-face
of - Gerard! "Oh, hello Gerard, what are you doing here?" I blurt out.
Stupid question! He's shopping! "Avoiding calls," he tells me. Apparently
the Aeroplanes are meant to be playing a football "stadium" in Clevedon
and he doesn't want to get roped into it. We had quite a long chat - it
was quite a long queue. He told me how Wojtek once cycled from London to
Bristol to knock on Gerard's door. We chatted about Robyn Hitchcock, who
is playing Bristol in December, and how Robyn's backing group of 2 years
ago contained some ex-Aeroplanes (Tim Keegan and AN Other) - no surprise
really cos isn't everyone an ex-plane? I'll ex-plane later etc... No news
of any gigs - I asked about the Xmas gig, Gerard didn't know anything. I
didn't ask about the album.

Oh and he was buying, at 11 o'clock in the morning, two bottles of red
wine.
