Single socks: not only the ability of washing machines to lose them, but 
their also to hide them away, usually bright red ones,*  in some hidden
corner,  and then release them when you're washing your best white shirts 
at
90c.  Result: a collection of pinky grey shirts.

I saw Levitation at some point in the early 90s at Oxford Brookes, and
"burning" and "cookery" describes it exactly, except that they flounced off
stage after about 40 minutes, claiming at the time that the drummer had
cracked his knuckle, but later saying that they just didn't like the vibe;
or more reasonably that the monitor sound wasn't good.
