i ain't saying they weren't influential...& the more we get into it, the
bigger this issue's gonna get, but here goes:

they often followed the important trends...they weren't writing lyrically
explosive songs (& lennon was the only one to eventually do that anyhow)
until well after dylan (& quite possibly reed...lennon had heard the
velvet's 1st before sgt. pepper) had showed em how.
they took rock & roll from it's visceral "black" & immediate roots &
turned
it into rock.
(i know, i know, i'm hyperbolizing here, but that's rock & roll too,
right?).
it was overthought, ofttimes pedantic, schmaltzy, innovative only in sonic
grandiosity, & basically, the melodies blew.
(haw haw...just had to get that out).

they changed rock, they changed pop culture, they changed history in many
ways...but they aren't much of a touchstone except for a lotta boring
guitar
pop singer/songers who can't admit that 2 chords & some honest yawping can
be a hell of a lot more enlightening, intense & just plain old,
meaningful.

i don't wanna argue...just wanted to get it out cos my gawd, do i hate em
&
most of what they've directly spawned.
 (i really like a lotta lennon's solo stuff tho).
