Sonic

Yep, can't add too much to NW2 or PV1's comments. Except......

Good to see you Paul? Vallis, albeit,as you say, briefly. The evening had
a definite Buzz to it. As a smoker I spent a good part of the early part
in the 'Fringe gig', under the gazebo betwixt Fleece and Stars. So many
people blowing in and out of the Fleece, seemed like half of Bristol
pitched up one time or another. And red rope walk, with Blue Carpet (of
course), Bouncers (?), and retro Aeroplane stewardessess. At a Blue
Aeroplanes gig. Of course.

We have all waxed on about the Four Guitar Thang with the Blue Aeroplanes
at one time or another. For me, sometimes, that is only as good as it is.

Saturday night at the Fleece was as good as it gets, as good as I can
remember. Dave, Max, Rodney and Rita. 'Broken and Mended' does it for me
as an opener. 'Hi, how are yer ?'

Heard 'Severn Beach'sound test from outside the Stars earlier, glad it's
become part of the rep. But 'Pony Boy'was the real deal for me on
Saturday. Don't get to all the BA gigs, and don't miss too many either,
but the last time I heard them play 'Pony Boy' live was at Nev's Birthday
gig at the Buttermarket, a deliberately low key rendering.

Max went Sonic on 'Pony Boy' on Saturday, and is like god to me now, for a
while !

The club looks, and sounded, fabulous, the between Act sounds oozed class
( if I were a chef, I would say 'drizzled', but you know where I'm going)
Nice one Rocker.

Congratulations to everybody involved, and good luck with the venture.

G

PS If there is confusion over the venue for the traditional Christmas gig
(Fiddlers or Fleece?), may I suggest playing both ?

I've been quoted enough in Nick's post (and in context, obviously Nick
would not survive long in journalism) not to need to add too much more,
but to echo everyone's thoughts that it was a superb night.

That was, for me, the best set they've played in quite a few years.
Broken and Mended has always been a favourite opener for me - I love the
riff and it was great to have Rodney there playing it on his Ricky. Raise
The Roof still sends shivers down my spine as the chorus kicks in - always
so much better live after the album version was a let-down in my opinion.
All those harmonies just lift it to another level, even better than when
the Larder sisters were in the band (anyone know what happened to them by
the way?). The same happened with Bury Your Love Like Treasure. I don't
think anyone has mentioned that Jack Leaves and Back Spring was played,
mainly Gerard, John and Rodney on acoustic. Excellent.

The "other" members' songs were all great - Rita's, Gerard Starkey's
(which really rocked) and of course Fun, another favourite of mine.

What did Gerard say about the Drive By Truckers? They are a big favourite
of mine. Seen them three times, and thinking seriously about heading to
either London or Birmingham in November to catch one of their gigs on
their current tour. Also saw former DBT Jason Isbell at a small gig in
Bristol not long ago.

Great to meet up with the travelling contigent as well - names are never
my strong point, particularly after a few beers, but Phil, Nat and
(briefly) Gordon. And I also ran into an old friend Fran, who doesn't
look a day older than when I first met her over 25 years ago.

Finally, it was particularly great to hear Severn Beach as that was the
song that started it all for me, stumbling slightly drunkenly across the
field at the Ashton Court festival one year in the second half of the 80's
some time, and hearing this song drifting across. I was intrigued and
bimbled over to watch the rest of the set. And the rest is (cat scan)
history....

Amazing it was!

I was not in the mood for it at all after a post-work real ale session on
Friday which left me with a stinking hangover on Saturday. This meant that
I took it easy (for me) and experienced my soberest Aeroplanes gig ever -
only 5 pints over the whole evening - and they were probably what kept me
going right up until the end of Breaking In My Heart!

Missed the first act but caught the Paris Riots and the Yes Rebels. The
former had a really tight, powerful sound with amazing bass and great
guitarist ("he leaves plenty of space - not many guitarists these days do
that" - Paul Vallis). The lead singer with his shaggy locks and Jim
Morrison poses played up the total rock star, very entertaining! Some of
the songs built up to quite amazing crescendos. The Yes Rebels (who used
to be Fortune Drive I'm told) were also excellent - amazing energy and
again extreme volume - my poor ears! - with an amazing drummer, who could
give John Stapleton a run for his money!

In between acts a female compere dressed in a kind of baroque burlesque
music-hall costume introduced the act and revved up the audience with, in
my opinion, rather too much use of the word "beautiful". But still - "it's
a good idea to have a compere 'cos most bands are crap at telling you who
they are" - another pearl of wisdom from the mind of Mr Vallis.

As we entered we were handed paper aeroplanes (GUESS which colour!) with
the intention, presumably, that we let fly with them at the band when they
took the stage. This, however didn't happen - probably for the best, as
they had quite sharp points and could have hurt if caught in the eye (or
Wojtek's nipple), though Gerard would have been safe behind his shades. A
blue balloon did the rounds for a bit though, until some cunt burst it.

The Aeroplanes took the stage at 10.55, and immediately took of with a
storming Broken and Mended, followed by an incredibly storming, blastingly
loud, triumphant sort of "greatest hits" set which included (in no
particular order), Jacket Hangs, Raise The Roof, 25 Kinds Of Love, Yr Own
World, Pony Boy (which didn't break anything this time, except my
eardrums!), Sulphur, a new one I don't know the title of, a Rita song, a
Gerard Starkey one, Oak Apple Tree, Warhol's 15, Severn Beach (don't think
I ever heard them do that before!), Fun, and the usual climactic Breaking
In My Heart, during which I entered the Death Zone and received the
requisite number of bruises.

After the gig Ann Sheldon bounded and twirled (yes, quite literally!) up
to us and invited us backstage, and so we (PV2 - not the Vallis, the other
one) and 1) trooped upstairs to a bizarre little attic room complete with
washing machine. We chatted to Wojtek for a bit - he lives in London and
teaches English (not through sex and death I hope) to Bangladeshi kids.
Also chatted to Gerard about the popularity of the Planes in the States
(they're more well known there than other Bristol bands e.g. MA) and bands
such as the Drive-By Truckers. I tried to introduce him to Those Poor
Bastards, who are similar to the Truckers but he seemed to get the wrong
end of the stick and thought I was labelling the Truckers as a comedy
band. Oh well! And it's not even as if TPB are completely a comedy
band... anyway. We also asked him about the new album and, although it is
finished, he told us he is still looking for a label. When PV2 mentioned
EMI Gerard all but kicked him in the bollocks! Poor PV2. We are truly not
worthy of Gerard. But my heart sank when he said it could take "6 to 8
months to find a label." Wail! Shriek! He knows what he's doing, but he
must also know that the fanbase is gagging for it. GAGGING!

Anyway PV2 and I left at about half 12 not wanting to hang around, we are
only fans anyway, and not mates of the band, and it was a privelige to be
allowed backstage in the first instance. Thanks to Ann for that. According
to Rocker the party went on beyond 4 - I doubt I would have lasted!

Outside also managed to say hi to Chris and congratulate him for an
amazing evening. And again, I will congratulate him here and thank him for
what was, truly, a legendary evening. It really felt like the beginning of
something! Though it was almost the end of my eardums.

Pardon?!

Use one of the usb turntables that everybody appears to have and convert
said item to a very poor quality digital format and mail it out to
everybody who missed last night?s probably amazing gig so that we can
rejoice/moan about hearing it.

...and more nice chances:
We were clearing out stuff from various moves that'd never been opened & I
came across a tape of a Planes concert recorded off BBC radio in about
1992 or so that I feared lost years ago. Amongst other gems it has the Boy
in the Bubble with Gerard singing "every generation throws another fucking
hero up the pop charts". Never truer.

Here's another one who can't wait for Saturday. Don't really understand
why people are getting so eggy about the details - aren't we all on the
same side here? Mental note for the next dinner party - never discuss
religion, politics or low loss digital music formats.

Anyway, in other news - I've just come back from a trip to the USA and on
the plane I was messing about with the entertainment programs. There were
a couple of compilations of music from British cities - there was a
Manchester one, and a Bristol one, which featured Aeroplane Blues as one
of the tracks. Which was nice.

Nice one Rocker!

That reminds me...

Bristol City Council granted the licence changes we requested last month
so we can open until 4am Thu, Fri & Sat every week if we want. They also
agreed to remove the restriction on children. This means anyone who is 16
or 17 is allowed in the venue at any time as long as they don't drink
alcohol. It also means anyone under 16 can stay in the venue until
midnight if accompanied by an adult.

We're happy to let you spin those tunes until 4am if you want Rocker.
Let's see if there's anyone hard core enough to still be there at the end!

...and if any of you want to bring your kids to their first Aero's gig -
no problem!

Another thing I realised at the rehearsal last weekend - this is the first
gig I've ever done with Rod in the band. I absolutely adore Broken &
Mended - always have. It's brilliant to play even though it's not the most
straightforward bass line I've ever had to learn. Oh and I'd forgotten how
difficult Pony Boy is too! Ok thats enough of the set list leaks.

See you Saturday

Chris

And another spoilt child takes his ball home - Chris, ignore these
immature criticisms, the vast majority of people on this list are fully
behind you in this venture. The Fleece has been wasted as a venue for well
over 10 years so it is obvious that it will take a bit of time to turn it
around.

And for the people who were complaining that it was too noisy **AT A ROCK
GIG** I can only quote Bob Dylan's famous indirect riposte to the shout of
"Judas" from the audience (as most on here will probably know he turned to
his band and said "Play it fucking loud" before they ripped into "Like A
Rolling Stone").

It is ace that the launch gig tickets are selling so well!

For anyone who is coming along, my friend Ian and I are "Getting
Together", Bristol's finest Northern Soul night, and we will be playing
vintage soul vinyl between the bands, and indeed after the bands - so if
enough people stick around after the Aeros' set we can promise to give you
something upbeat and danceable!

Hope to see a lot of you there!

Rocker
