For my money Illuminate is the best Jazz Butcher album and one of the best
albums ever.

Draining the Glass is a good compilation of early stuff. Free Lunch is
later stuff. They both look like pretty decent representations of his
work.. If you're going to choose only one, get Draining the Glass.

What do people think of the tracks on the two CD compilations,
Draining the Glass and Free Lunch? They're available on CD; otherwise
it's MP3s only, or expensive second hand CDs.

Seconded. I love them all, but Scandal in Bohemia is what I think of
as the Butcher archetype. (Condition Blue or Cult of the Basement maybe
being the most Blue Aeroplanes -like.)

I would start with "A Scandal In Bohemia", which starts with the
early classic "Southern Mark Smith"... but there are good tracks on every
LP!

      Cheers!
