Well, the Dennis Pennis thing rings a bell. This would have been 'Mean
Fiddler' ( the old one in the pleasant hamlet of Harlesden ), and if so,
yes, a December gig. I caught a couple there, 94 and 96, so more likely
the latter. Seem to remember Rodney playing with Paul Mulreany as support,
not joining the Planes until invited to open 'Breaking...'. This would
explain the mystery guitarist, though I am sure Angelo was there.
Was definitely getting adamantly beered myself that night, was up near
the back with the ex, and was not nearly such an anorak about line ups as
I may be now, so that's about all I can offer.

Think Nora was flogging the limited edition cassettes of 'Weird Shit' at
that one.

Another Blue Aeroplanes / (vague) BBC story:

I lived in London around 96/97. I remember going to see the Blue
Aeroplanes play a gig. I went by myself and proceeded to drink
continuously through out the gig till the point where I became a bit worse
for wear and had to go for a tactical chunder in the bogs. I came out and
much too my surprise it looked like Dennis Pennis (the comedian) was on
stage and the aeroplanes were thrashing out a punk standard.. He had
taken over lead vocals from Gerard.
It wasn't till years later when I was working at the beeb in Queen
Margaret Drive, Glasgow and I spotted Paul Kaye aka Dennis pennis (he had
become a serious actor starring in a drama about a man who went to live on
an remote Scottish island with his family - wife played by Cindy Beale of
eastenders) . I plucked up the courage and started chatting to him.
Really nice bloke and apparently good mates with a then BA guitarist if
memory serves me either Loz / Jez and in the true spirit of the BA
collective had been let on for one song, a Sex Pistol cover.

Now i need all your help. Who else was there? Is there an official
historian who can tell me where this gig was(where was i!!)? when it
was? was it a legenday BA Christmas gig? What sex pistols song was
covered? Which guitarist was paul kaye's mate?

Don't work there anymore. Still a BA fan though.

I once tried to persuade a producer of an afternoon news programme
to use Jacket Hangs for a 'best intro in rock music' pack. The song never
made it into the pack. I never spoke to the producer again...

Football Focus ain't Broadcasting House - it's TV Centre at White
City.
I expect they have their own underground Blue Aeroplanes network
there
to match the one in W1.

Though in BBC radio, BA still stands for Broadcast Assistant in
most
        peoples' minds...
