Not a dumb question at all...
You've been given an '0845 number'.
These were introduced a few years back, and are non-geographic codes and
aren't associated with any area. Originally, calls made to them were
charged at local rates, but over time phone company charging packages
have changed, and local calls are now generally cheaper than calls to
'0845 numbers'.
(At the same time '0800 numbers' were introduced, which allow free
calls. Also '0870 numbers', which are charged at 'national rate' (i.e.
more expensive than local calls)).
There probably isn't a standard format to use when listing these
numbers, however a space is usually inserted between 4th and 5th (but
sometimes 5th and 6th) digits. The remaining digits often get split
various ways: 3+4 digits (probably most common), 1+3+3 digits, 3+3
digits (also common), or even 2+2+2 digits...
e.g.
3+ 4 digits (probably most common): 0845 685 6013
1+3+3 digits: 0845 6 856 013
3+3 digits (also common): 08456 856 013
or even 2+2+2 digits: 08456 85 60 13.
Hope that helps!
