As I was standing a bit further back from the carnage of the mosh pit
(which 
seemed to consist of NW2 drunkenly moshing and everyone else trying not

be in the way when the inevitable tumble happened - NW2 is a big lad)

a pulled muscle sustained during a five-a-side game the evening before,
I 
was able to keep something vaguely approximating to a set list.

Bury Your Love Like Treasure - brilliant and surprising opener.  Not
heard 
them play this for many years.
Raise the Roof - better live than on the album (as always). Tolerance
Fireball - the Deep Purple song, which I know well from my teenage
jitter 
years, from the forthcoming Harvester lp.  The band played it well, the 
arrangement was a little dark and sparse, and Gerard didn't seem too 
confident with it, though I guess he was never going to try and emulate
Ian 
Gillan.
Outdoor Miner - A Wire song from the Harvest lp Chairs Missing.  I
didn't 
know this one, and only found out what it was by noting down a lyrics
and 
googling it - this is the one that went "Lies on his side, is he trying
to 
hide" in the chorus.  Gerard seemed happier with this one. Treeful of
Starlings - not my favourite song on Altitude, but I realise that 
I may be in a minority there.
Beautiful Is - with support act Rita Lynch joining them on guitar and 
backing vocals, which she did on a few tracks.  Rita has been on the
Bristol 
music scene probably as long as the Aeroplanes themselves.
25 Kinds of Love - I thought this was great too.
Didn't get the next one - sorry!
Nor the next - it was a Gerard Starkey number.
Jacket Hangs - a bit slower than usual maybe.
Had it all, Lost it, Got it Back, Gave it away - Now I Want it Again,
But 
Its Gone - Great to hear this one again.
And Stones - great version, but no Weightless to lead us in.
Yr Own World - I love this one - great set-closer.

Encore:
Severn Beach - absolutely overjoyed to hear this one again.  I think
this 
may have been the first Planes song I ever heard, stumbling drunkenly
across 
the field at Ashton Court festival sometime in the 80's.  It drew me to
the 
stage, and I've loved the song ever since.
Breaking In My Heart - which seemed to get louder and louder as the song

went on.  Missed a bit of it trying to decide whether PV1 and a couple
of 
other blokes had the fight involving NW2 that tried to break out under 
control or whether my help was needed.  Luckily, it didn't seem to be.

Other notes:
The first band on - whose name escape me for the moment - featured Bill 
Cargill, who played with the Planes on at least one of the Xmas gigs in
the 
past few years and, if memory serves, the Thekla Tsunami Benefit that
they 
played with a quite different line-up (Ruth Cochrane, Hazel Winter,
Caroline 
Trettine, Rodney plus the usual suspects John Langley and Joe Allen).

I thought Saturation Point were pretty good live - exemplary musicians
to a 
man - but I doubt I'd ever buy an album.

Rita Lynch is good in small doses, but a bit samey, even in a short set.

Would have been better if she'd used an acoustic on the odd track, or a 
least changed her guitar sound a bit.

Great night all in - would have been nice if Wojtek had had a bit more
room 
to move, but still.  A good crowd - not sold out I don't think but a
great 
atmosphere.

Great to see Gordon again and a few of the usual Bristol suspects, 
especially Sam Giles - Lit 3 looks at least as beautiful as its 2 
predecessors.  Busy Xmas so haven't actually listened to it yet though.

It was like all your Christmas rolled into one.

Cold, empty to start, the BAs doing a sound check as the Guinness
filled.

First support:  No Such Error.   Young, imaginative;  guitar/ vocals;  
drumsmer with a weirdly minimal kit;  keyboard player with a lot of
bass.  
Abrupt endings, neat guitar work up and down the neck.  Neat  lyrics.
"Life 
is strange."

A touch of The Fiery Furnaces?

Second support:  Saturation Point  I know we're supposed to like  them, 
three BAs in a spin-off line-up, but I think they're crap.   Fripp with
a 
migraine.  The kind of noise which is okay in a  rehearsal studio when 
you're warming up.  No-one seemed to like it.   They need  better
structure 
ot the pieces or a vocalist.  That is,  either stick to being the BAs or

sign up third act Suzanne.  She  played a kind of post-modern punk.
That 
is, not very punk and a  nicely expensive guitar, but with punk
pretensions 
and only five  major chords in the repertoire.  Good.  Sometimes the
rhythm 
went  awry.  Too many (surely unintentional) seven-beat bars for me.

BAs at last came on at gone eleven.

Bury your love like treasure.  I remember that.  Raise the roof high.  
Tolerance.  All the usual suspects.  Two covers from the April-
scheduled 
Harvest tribute album.  I think I was supposed to recognise  them.
Didn't.

A great new song called Twenty-five kinds of love which worked
lyrically 
and musically very well.  "But that's still not enough."

A rather slow - and none the worse for that - Jacket Hangs and a  
technically impeccable ... And Stones;  a Tree full of Starlings  better

than the recording (fuller lyrics?) and after a Severn Beach,  a big big

Breaking in my heart with seven guitarists.

Oh, and I bought a copy of LIT 3.  (Number 1).

There seemed to be copies left at the end.  Stan Giles was selling
them. I 
didn't have the courage or the cash to buy any more copies on  spec.
