Ditto Paul. One of the great things about Swagger is that Gil Norton made
them sound big, which at the time and those songs they were in a live
context ie not jangly. Does that make sense? They rock a bit on Altitude
but it does sound a bit forced at times.

  Thanks Chris, that's great news!

Are EMI funding the current activity?

One of the criticisms that has been levelled at some of the recent
releases
(notably Altitude and Record Player) is the muddy production. I can
understand Gerard's desire to keep it "in house" for artistic control
and
financial reasons, and I know he likes to go for a more low-fi sound
sometimes, but I'm not so sure it suits the Aeroplanes style. Hopefully
the
fact that you're on board will mean that the base recordings used are
better
quality than some of those on other recent releases which will lead to
an
  overall improvement in sound quality.

As regards the websites, well, we won't hold our breath.....

Your future bulletins will be awaited with great anticipation!

  Hi everyone

I just thought I'd post an update of what's going on behind the
scenes...

The band are recording a brand new album of brand new songs. Gerard is
hoping to get it out early next year. This will make it FOUR albums in
12
months!! (Swagger deluxe, Altitude, Harvester and the new one).

I have been recording all the rehearsals since the harbourside gig.
Gerard's theory is basically this. When a band goes into a studio to
record, they often find the original recording of the first time the
band
played a new song has a better vibe than the full quality studio
recording.
These recording are usually done on a dictaphone or walkman for
reference
so the quality make them un-useable. The idea is that I record the
rehearsals to a relatively good quality on my laptop so there is a
back-up
of all the original versions of the new songs which are recorded at a
high
enough quality to use on the album if the version if a particular track
can't be bettered in the studio.

I've been following the aeroplanes as a fan since a gig at the tropic
club
in Stokes Croft back in 1985. To be involved on this level has been
fascinating. I can also honestly report that the new songs (which are
still
vocal-less at this stage) sound fantastic. This is shaping up to be the
best Aeroplanes album for years. Gerard is determined to go one better
than
Altitude and from what I've heard the new songs, especially the rockier
ones, are up there even with Swagger! As a little nugget of info there
is a
fabulously titled song called "China Brilliant Automotive" (apparently
taken from the first Chinese company to be registered on the New York
stock
exchange.. or something) and it's a real rocker!

On the web site front, we had a meeting with some people who run the
http://www.blueaeroplanes.co.uk/ site. They are setting it up so that
it is
easy for Gerard to add updates himself from home. He is planning to put
up
a video every month and put alternative versions of older tracks up for
download. I was unaware that so many of the songs had videos made for
them.
I had only seen Jacket Hangs and ...And Stones until last week. He
showed
me the videos to about 15 other tracks. Some are from European TV
shows,
one was from a gig at the Western Star Domino Club back in 1984 (they
looked SO young!), one was from The Old Grey Whistle Test (I think it
was
"Arriving") and some were full-on video productions.

As for the domain names, and I think I remember this correctly though
I'm
not sure, Gerard said that EMI own blueaeroplans.com and
  blueaeroplanes.co.uk but Gerard owns theblueaeroplane.co.uk

One piece of info I passed on a couple of months a go about possible
gigs
is Oslo and Athens needs clarification. I was under the impression that
these were confirmed gigs but I got the wrong end of the stick. They
are
both just gigs in the pipeline waiting for the band whenever they want
them. The new album is taking priority at the moment so they will
probably
remain as just possible gigs until what I presume would be the full
tour to
promote the new album next year (although I'm just guessing here!)

Abi, you can send your email to me at chris@al...co.uk and I'll give
it to Gerard when I'm back in Bristol later this week.

Also, Mark, did you manage to get hold of John Langley? If not I can
pass
any message on to him at the same time.

So I'll post another update when there is a build up of enough new
stuff to
  talk about.

  Cheers

  Chris
