gang-
first, let us wish Brian Wilson a happy 64th borthday!!!. now...
let's face it: the blue aeroplanes have made records and done gigs that
stand comfortably beside the best rock/pop/folk and spoken word
records/performances of all time. yes: ALL TIME. how can i be so sure of
this? well, i was lucky enought to meet the boys when i was younger
than
gerard but older than lix lee. and do gigs w/ them just before swagger
came
out in D.C, LA and after in London and Bristol. My band and I were present
during many beatsongs sessions i LA w/ the planes, the butcher, gil
norton,
etc..
i was not only super, super looookie to see the blue 'planes just before,
/duting the 'swagger' tour but played on the same double bill with them
(my
group was a washington 9:30 club staple called "radioblue" so we always
gigged together. i also got to get up there and do encores and the
usual
end of the set extravaganzas. it was a sublime time of life, full of
creativity (dueling eliot poems line for line from memory on the bus w/
gerard (hewy, i was, like 25 or summat!), male bonding w/ the boys,
filling
up on newcastle, jager, and bolivian marching powder. etc. you get the
drill. around 'bestsongs' radioblue supported the planes for a
couple/few
nites at the mean fiddler in late dec. and did a a x-mas gig or two at the
famous bristol groove-dive, the fleece and firkin (pls. excuse
spellings!!!)
and bothered the lemon drops as they recorded Sound at real world. our
bass
player stole roseanna arquette's toothbrush.
anyway-- that group--especially once joe allen joined- was perhaps one of
the best groups of the 20th century. (hey, maybe i'm nuts, but i recently
made this case to another pal who basically agreed with my rant on the
importance of the planes (having been an aeroplane himself for a spell) ,
writer, guitarist (for the dangerously under-appreciated "mighty lemon
drops" ---check out his studio
http://community-2.webtv.net/rollercoasterpg/Rollercoaster/), amazing
studio
engineer producer has, among other things, recorded, played on and
produced
various tracks for me--if you're interested in hearing, drop and e-mail or
see links below), the MLD's david newton who prouced, engineered and
played
on the following songs avail in full on
(http://cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/notlame10-13.m3u)
(http://www.garageband.com/artist/markhelm/podcast/newsletter) and
(http://cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/notlame10-13.m3u)
(http://www.notlame.com/Mark_Helm/Page_1/NLHELM1.html)of all time. i
still
remember sleeping over john lang's house and, in the morning over tea he
played me (on solo acoustic guitar) a 'new" tune.....that new tune was
'you are loved.'' i think alex lee is wearing the same shirt on the you
are loved video).
if you're interested, ask gerard langley if he'll agree to a release (over
the net to this list) an aeroplanes homge/parody called "the decline of
wester furniture."
long live the planes and, no--i didn't forget you, v-tek, nor do i
underestimate the importance of ann's dazzingly original and downright
human
paintings, spoon, the plane's soundman, BAZZER (who was AMAZING), or the
boy-genius rodney allen, writer for the ages and a man whose songs i've
often rovered. oh, and the one and ONLY --PAT FISH--the man, the myth,
and
a guy i still owe a beer ot 50); and let us not forget 2 men of unending
talent, genius and love who managed a super fun and ofen unmanageable
marathon chicks, chems and composition--managers, cerne canning and simon
esplen.
so sorry i babble. my site is down, but will be up again soon (read: when
i
get a job in nashville that doesn't require a cowboy hat or or discourage
besatleboots) . i think babbling is called 'blogging' now. but this was
a
quick, semi-buzzed rant amied at aluding a bunch of guys who don't realize
just hoe important or bave it was/is to do what the=y do/did.
but please ask gerard if it's ok to share 'the decline" and get john
langers me e-mail and tell him if he doesn't write, i'll come to visit him
again- naked.

Hey, mountaineering along the Kennet and Avon Canal, abseiling down the
lockgates sounds really cool.
Can it really be done on a motorcycle though ?
On topic , lucky enough to catch Les Bleus for 'Swagger' and Altitude
Tour.
I hate disseminating, but by the time of the Mean Fiddler gig I was
listening to Saturation Point and wondering what it was that I liked about
'the number', and thinking Deke Leonard and Man.
Anyway, off to get my Bike Belays.
