- Bcc:
An excellent night indeed - well worth the trip up from Bristol.
The set was Swagger - all of it - in order. Most of it worked too! 2
tracks had evidently never been performed live before. They even wheeled
out a sax player for Anti-Pretty (either she was a friend, a fan, or EMI
must have been paying. Or I'm just getting very cynical, as well as old and
cantakerous, in my old age.) A couple of songs were a little loose,
Anti-Pretty probably being the worst offender. No-one fancied taking on the
ridiculously intricate, Angelo-showing-off guitar intro to And Stones (I
thought they might get Kearey to do it on a banjo, as Joff did a few years
back) but it still rocked.
The encores were a magnificent, Nick Jacobs-led Razorwalk, Different Now and
the inevitable riot that is Breaking In My Heart. 88 Out was also on the
encore set list but presumably was dropped due to time constraints. Darn
it! Nick obviously wanted to run around, as per the old days, but the
dimensions of the stage meant that all he could do was swap places with
Woytek a couple of times and swing his guitar over Gerard's head every time
he ducked down.
The rest of the band was John Langley, Joe Allen, Max Noble, Julian Poole,
Rodney and Ian Kearey looking like he was having a ball on mandolin. No
idea who the MC was though - sorry Gordon! I thought Bill Cargill was going
to be involved, as I think he played on one of the recent radio outings.
Perhaps he'll be taking Rodney's place on the tour?
Lovely to finally meet Lisa (she is NOT Gerard, it is now official), not to
mention Nathaniel, James, Christian, assorted Phils, several large friendly
Norwegians and a couple of others whose names elude my memory at the moment.
Who else did I meet?! And who did I miss? Was my lime green t-shirt not
loud enough?
Gerard was talking afterwards (we just wandered backstage, there didn't seem
to be any security!)about getting a Bristol date added on to the tour, but
he was thinking of something special, maybe some sort of warehouse party,
certainly something at a non-traditional venue. Whether it'll happen I have
no idea! He conceded that Fiddlers may be a good fallback, but mentioned
maybe playing 2 nights? Not sure if they'd fill it for 2 nights,
personally, unless they did a Swagger night (like last night) and an "other
stuff" night, which would surely lure a few of us out for both. Hopefully
we'll get something sorted - I didn't get home til 2.40am.
I missed most of the supports, unfortunately.

PS: We parked in an underground multi-storey car park down by Queensway.
Loads of amazing cars in there, obviously owned by local residents and left
there long term. Several Ferraris, a Dodge Charger, A Cadillac Coupe De
Ville, An Aston Martin (though we saw 3 more of those walking from the car
to the gig), A lovely old Alfa Spider and, er, a pristine mark 1 Escort.

With little to go on in advance regarding personnel, it was fantastic to
gradually see the faces in the crowd and realise just how good it was going
to be.
Eventually realised that it was John Langley crashing out the rythm for
the second support.( was I the only person who enjoyed them ?).
Then Deb pointed out that Wojtek was standing next to me. She recognised
the shirt first.
Then spotted Rodney propping up the bar.
Also realised eventually that the guy standing on the stairs behind us
was Nick Jacobs.
Then, they are on.Never fully appreciated what a big fella Gerard is, and
what a suit !
Alex Lee, looking, and sounding, more like Alvin circa Woodstock.
The set list was taped to a monitor just it front of us, so quickly
realised it was indeed going to be a concert of the album of the book of the
same name etc.
I doubt they've EVER played it better.
Wojtek swinging from the ducting above the moshers, Gerard at one point
wanting to do a Rod Stewart with the mike stand, and being foiled by the
same ducting not four inches above his head !
Nick Jacobs firing in Razorwalk for the encore, EVERYBODY firing off for
Breaking...
A brilliant return !
Good to meet up with Eyvind and the Norwegians before hand.
Eyvind, did you manage to get Gerard to pledge a gig in Norway ?
Two questions.
Who was the fella playing Mandolin ?
Who was the MC ?
Tickets are indeed on sale for Mean Fiddler 6th April.

Now I'm really jealous! I'm glad everyone had a good time and that the
show was great. I really hope we get a show in New York!
P.S. The Editors LP is great!

Hi All,
This is the first time I've said anything here, normally just read
everyone elses postings. Couldn't agree more about the gig last night I'd
almost forgotten how good live they are, as I've never been able to get to
the Bristol shows. First saw them (and memory might be a little hazy here)
supporting Voice of The Beehive (I think) at the Town and Country Club in
Kentish Town (not sure about that either). I don't know what year that was
but the last time I saw them was the 10th anniversary concert (Mean Fiddler
Harlesden?). With 'Weightless' and 'Stones' still ringing in my ears my
first job this morning was to book my tickets for the 6th of April, second
job was to order Swagger to replace my worn out vinyl copy. Can't say I
liked the two single support acts but do the three Aeroplanes who did their
own set have a band name? Going to see The Cribs, The Ordinary boys,
Editors, Kaiser Chiefs, Placebo and The Paddingtons over the next few months
too, so it's a great time for bands at the moment as far as I'm concerned,
although at 45 (46 on April 9th) I know I should have grown out of all this
by now, but I hope I never do.
KuyaColin.
P.S. I hope I'm not being too rude hear but: when did Rodney Allen
leave the band and Ian Beale take his place? 'One Rodney Allen, There's
Only One Rodney Allen!'
