Re: downloading torrent to hard disc query?

As I understand it, the deal with torrents is that they work differently
than
usual downloads. When you download a file, say through iTunes, it's a
linear
process-- the file is copied to the target system sequentially-- one bit
follows another, until the entire file is coipied from the source computer
to
the target computer.

The thing is that if three (or three thousand) people are copying the same
file, each person gets their own linear stream. If you have 50% of the
file,
and I've only got 5%, then there's a waste of 45%. If I could get your
45%,
then my download would finish more quickly.

When you use a torrent file, the transfer isn't linear. It's broken up
into
pieces. So if you have the same three (or three thousand) people getting
the
same file using a torrent scheme, then the network keeps track of which
people
have which pieces, and shares the pieces amongst all the users. The
torrent
software is smart enough to balance out who's got what pieces, and who
should
get what piece next.

The end result is that big files transfer much faster, provided that there
are
enough torrent sessions active to send the pieces around. The bigger the
file,
the more pieces there are, so the more torrent users you need.

If you're downloading a file via bit torrent file and you're the only
user, you
may have a wait on your hands. Sometimes it's quicker to have someone
burn a
copy of what you want and stick the disc in the mail :)
