Okay, you had to ask.
It's Xmas, so I've not had time to fully review LIT2 (signs of relief from
all), or even to give it the dignity of a proper listen, but here's a quick
precis for anyone who cares. "Previously on..."
The original LIT, as we all remember, was a limited edition CD of Gerard
reading some of his favourite poetry, arranged with backing tracks by
artists as diverse as REM and Love. Not that they were in on it, of
course,
but Gerard was able to get his hands on some forgotten and/or unused
instrumental pieces and set his readings to fit the tunes. It's pretty
good, but for me very slightly marred by the inclusion of some Aeroplanes
versions which most of us already have - "The Applicant", "Police (38
Divinity)" and so on. One of the most appealing things about it is the
sleeve by Sam Giles - gloriously interesting with its photographic collage,
and all packaged in a hand numbered paper sweetie bag. Classic.
LIT2, subtitled "Teaching Poetry as a Foreign Language", is the second
volume of poetry readings, but approached very differently to the first.
Recorded at the LIT launch gig in the Cube Cinema, Bristol last year, this
time Gerard made his readings to live accompaniment. Most of the tracks
feature the band Fuzz Against Junk, who supported the Aeroplanes at the
Fiddlers club this month. They have a wild, jazzy, krautrocking style
which
sometimes recalls the earlier, more spontaneous Aeroplanes. A couple of
tracks feature solo guitar genius Paul Bradley whose noodlings and
soundscapes are imaginative and unique. It's a shame there aren't more of
his because he backed Gerard on another occasion and was even more
remarkable again. Perhaps on LIT3? Again the sleeve is by Sam Giles, and
the collage focuses on the performers rather than the poets. The poems
themselves are printed in the booklet and are varied and strange. My
favourites being "Adultery" by Carole Ann Duffy, and "8 Fragments for Kurt
Cobain" by Jim Carroll.
Anyway, to fans of Gerard and his style of delivery and taste in words and
music, it's a must. And only 25 left!
