Fiddlers

Unusual gig, I'd say, even by Aeroplanes standards.
Weird set list. And about as unrehearsed as I've seen
a band play and get away with. At times they each
seemed to be playing different bits of the songs from
each other, which at least reminded us of the early,
experimental stuff. I feel quite sorry for Max - he's
a superb guitarist but he always gets roped in at the
last minute. Having said that, you should be able to
manage the chords for a song that you actually wrote
yourself (Treeful of Starlings).

Gerard was clearly enjoying it enough to ambitiously
ask for requests when they ran out of rehearsed songs.
Weightless was going to be great: Max started it off
and Ruth looked prepared to wing it on bass. But then
Gerard couldn't remember the opening words. Or any of
the others. So Rodney decided to quit while they were
ahead and start the Breaking in my Heart riff. And
once that song's started, you know it's over.

Anyway, there were definitely more people there than
previous years and the atmosphere made it memorable, I
thought. I can't believe I waited til the last song
to get right down the front - the sound was so much
better there, even though it was behind the main
speakers. Damn - I ought to know Fiddlers by now.

And I believe it was a Becks, not Bud, sign that we
agreed to meet under next year. Let's all meet up in
the year 2005.
