Well, to be fair, 355 to one.

that
much in common I'd say - better live than on record. Also, it hardly
seems
to matter which musicians are in the band these days - the guru
(Gerard/MES)
sets the tone and the band sounds better than the sum of its parts.
Bloody
shame that of all the nights in the year they both choose the same
one. I
mean, what are the chances, really? A million to one.

What are the Planes like now?
Well, it depends on who turns up on the night!
It doesn't exist as a band anymore, but Gerard has a "squad" of
musicians,
mainly ex-members, who will answer the call if they can make it. Last
year
we had Angelo back for the first time in absolutely ages, Wojtek too,
and
Rodney is invariably there, but who knows what will happen this year?
Who
else was there last year? The Radon Daughters - Dawn and Baz Larder
- did
some backing vocals but not a lot else, Bill Cargill played rhythm
guitar,
was it John L on drums?
Half the fun it who will be there, and whether we'll actually
recognise
them
or not (hardly anyone recognised Angelo with short hair last year!)
Will miss you at the Planes gig, Nick, but will no doubt see you the
night
before for Mr H.

What are 'planes shows like nowadays? Old songs? Wojtek? I've not
seen them for 13 years. Have already bought tickets, mind.

For those travelling from out of town, a 2 day stop in Bristol with
Robyn
Hitchcock on the Thursday and the Planes (NOT The Fall) on the Friday
would
be a great trip.
The Fall, are even more notoriously uneven in live performance than
Badly
Drawn Boy or Van Morrison. I'm not a huge fan anyway, and was going
to
say
that they have a great future behind them, but then realised that the
same
could possibly be said for that evening's competition.....
The Bierkeller isn't a great venue - very low ceiling, odd shape - but
nevertheless has hosted some of the best gigs I've ever seen. Those
that
immediately spring to mind: Mr Hitchcock again with The Egyptians in
around
1987 or so, The Levellers in 1991, and the best gig I've ever been to:
The
Richard Thompson Band in November 1988. That Thompson gig was odd as
Billy
Bragg was playing the same night at the Colston Hall (with Michelle
Shocked
as support), so there must have been loads of other people who, like
me,
were torn about which one to go to. Amazingly both gigs still sold
out
and
both showed up in Venue's best gigs of the year poll a month or two
later.
This time Hitchcock is playing at the Fleece, which is a really great
venue
- the best in Bristol IMO. I've seen him there several times, and
elsewhere, and he's always brilliant live. Can't recommend highly
enough.
I'm pretty sure Gerard is a fan. In fact I have a vague recollection
that
he actually reviewed one of RH's previous visits to the Fleece in
(Bristol's
What's On magazine) Venue.
I'll be at both.

None whatsoever. The Fall always come on late.
I still don't honestly know what I'm gonna doooo....
At least Robyn Hitchcock is the night before. But you know what'll
happen
now - that'll move to the 3rd, so I'll have to choose between The
Fall,
Robyn and the Aeros!!!
Hurry up with this cloning business!

Why??? Why must they do this to us?
Mind you, it would make a great double bill. What do you think are
the
chances of The Fall finishing their set before the Aeroplanes begin
theirs?
About as thin as MES's hair these days...

I've just found out that The Fall are at the Bristol Bierkeller on
the
very
same night as the Aeroplanes Xmas Gig!
THE HORROR!
I must be loyal to MES.... but the Aeros Xmas Gig is a holy
tradition...
does not compute! CRASH
