Auden's poem Journal of an Airman is part of a much longer piece, The Orators, which is itself a kind of performance script half-way between poetry per se and a play.

I don't expect you can buy a copy of The Orators except as a collector's edition from the 30s which will be v expensive. However, mine is in a paperback volume called The English Auden and edited by Mendelson.

In 1939 Auden went off the US and became the American Auden (I suppose): this big book contains stuff from the 30s which is hard otherwise to obtain - Auden was a big reviser of early work and often refused to publish it - eg the poem on Spain.

Well, that's about it. If I really cared, I guess I'd have checked on Amazon that you can still buy this book ...

I do care, really. I looked on Amazon and it isn't there!

Maybe try the Poetry Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye. Good on Auden I think.

Philip
