Re: Fiddlers

Fiddlers was actually a jail which held prisoners of war in Napoleonic conflicts. More recently it was Courage Brewery's Social Club, before the Cleary family took it over and turned it into a private members club. They used to put on the odd folk session in there, and someone mentioned that it would make an ideal gig venue. So they put a big charity gig on to get it on the map and it went from there. Not long after there was a fire at the Fleece which closed it down for a while, but to save cancelling all the gigs they put the best of them that had already been booked on at Fiddlers, so not long after most Bristol gig-goers knew where it was. They put on quite a few world music gigs and local bands nowadays. The PA never used to be that great but since they've moved the speakers from the stage to being suspended from the ceiling the sound has improved no end.
So now if you get into a conversation with a local when you're down here you won't be too in the dark!
Here endeth the hist'ry lesson.

I'd love to put people up too, but I'm moving house round about then (probably that weekend knowing my luck). See you all there though, whatever happens.
There's no denying it - Fiddlers is a weird venue.

Not really sure. How much are you looking at spending?
(Would love to offer to put people up, but am studying in Liverpool at the moment, and have to stay with my Dad or friends every time I come back as it is!)
There is nothing that I can think of that is literally round the corner or anything. In fact Fiddlers is in a very odd location, although not far from the centre of Bristol. If you've never been there before it would be good to get a map. Perhaps there is one on their website? Happy to give directions, but probably easier once you know where you are staying.
There are some B&B looking type places along Coronation Road, which is a short walk from Fiddlers. There is at least one place on Dean Lane as well. There are a couple of posh-ish hotels within walking distance as well. The closest are probably the Jarvis, the City Inn and Jury's, in that order (other Bristol dwellers may wish to argue with my geography of course!) If you come across anything with a BS3 postcode it shouldn't be too far away, but it might be worth checking with us yokels 'ere first, like.
Best look it up on the internet and ring around for some prices.
Let us know how you get on.
