My favorite by far is XO, though if you play that you may be somewhat
mystified as to why so many people seem unsurprised by Smith's death --
it's overall a pretty upbeat album. The records he made for Kill Rock
Stars are more somber -- not a bad one among them, but also nothing that
stands out as the best starting place.
