Count me in on the t-shirt. Saw one once, but never owned one. Hands up
anyone with enough time on their hands to bring that list up to date!

Phil, I'm a big Levitation fan. Never saw them, but a mate played me 'Arcs
of Light and Dew' and I was hooked. Their final album 'Meanwhile Gardens'
is a bit crap, however. I did read somewhere that Dark Star had split
which
is a shame because they carried forward a lot of the same ideas. I did see
them at the Fleece in Bristol supporting Madder Rose. Weirdly, Gerard and
Ann were in the crowd.

I'll be at the gig on Friday. I know Messrs Vallis and Hendry. The rest
we
leave to chance. If it helps I'll wear an Aeros t-shirt!

I remember seeing the "Are you now or have you ever been a member..."
T-shirt on sale at that T&C gig. Of course now I wish that I'd got one, so
if there's a chance to rectify my mistake then I would definitely like to
put my name down for one...

One of my favourite T-shirts (still) is the "Beatniks With Altitude"
T-shirt
(white with blue/green aeroplane front & back, with slogan on right
sleeve).
I can't remember which gig I acquired that one, but probably a year or two
before?

Comments on the board led me to listening again, it was previously
my least favourite BA's album and i was surprised at how badly i actually
knew it. I think i'd just filed it away as "rifferama" .. but as ever there
is
lots more to it.

For a start the sleeve is terrific. Ann Sheldon's paintings are as
distinctive
and lasting as ever, esp the model plane in the red circle. The inner
photos
capture the wigged out live experience so well, esp where they are all
collapsed
on the floor

Detective Song is great, the lyrics elliptical ("Westron Wynde and total
minus three"?),
in a sense the audience becomes the detective. A great live opener at the
time. Scared is classic Planes, all fireworks and dark atmospheres. Sugared
Almond, Contact High .. sorry the writing (chords) is too ordinary for me.
A Map Below - one of Gerard's best produced vocals - not too reverbed and
rhythmically out there - try copying it! James sounds like its trying to be
What it Is .. but lacks the chorus. But nice, when the vocals stop it
sounds
like a Fairport Convention bootleg. Golden Birds, again much better than i
remember it, quite disturbing actually. Saint Me and the Devil, nowt wrong
with this, again sounds like Fairport warming up with an English Lit don
intoning over the top. Dark, hmm dont get this one, Secret Destination er
why that 'orrible saxaphone, misguided decision that one. Dear though the
Night, well i can hear what he was trying to do .. the guitars arent very
well recorded really.

I think it probably remains my least favourite BA's album .. the quality of
the writing isnt there, plus the flow of the album .. well it flows badly,
and is about 4 tracks too long. But lets face it Gerard is not capable of
putting out a bad record. And sometimes the ones that dont work at first
make sense at a later date. Certainly Rough Music sounds better now than at
the time. The band was in transition, struggling to write commercial (rock)
material to return them to heights of Swagger/Beatsongs, exhausted by
touring, schizophenic through all the personnel changes, all underpinned by
Gerard's wilful folky experimentation (the original aim of the group
remember) but which just wound up the industry people looking for something
easily categorisable.

No wonder there was quite a gap between Rough Music and the next record ..
and why much of the music press began to write off the band. But what do
you
do - record albums to order? Give them the flavour of the day? No way,
follow your muse you might have a smaller audience but the respect is
greater. I think the next release was the Wierd Shit cassette-only package
.. a more interesting piece of work than Rough Music, and truer to the real
Gerard vision. And where he is now is also truer to himself. Gerard has
become more arch, more difficult to follow, more stubborn.
Never apologise, never explain, just go forward one small step at a time.

Cant wait to hear LIT how do i get a copy anyone?

Richard

Sounds like a fair review to me, if a little harsh! Just kidding...

Anyone still without a copy of LIT should
a) be ashamed and
b) email Sam Giles at polishfisherman@su...com who will no doubt be
delighted.

It's worth it, folks.

Phil,

Thanks for the offer. I'll definitely take one off your hands. I've only
seen this legendary item once, outside Paddington station. A nice
female-type person was inside it, but alas I was running for a train, so a
dalliance of any kind, either musical or emotional was out of the question.

Guys/chics

If someone wants to send me their 'are you now or have you ever been?'
T-shirt I will get some made up for sale at the December gig - provided
there's enough interest expressed online over the next couple of
weeks.....is this a good idea? Let me know ? Friends across the pond I'm
sure I can mail some out to you.

Hi all,

Wow - all this correspondance - great stuff. Shame I've missed most of it
as my mum is in hospital and I've finally got a chance to log on.

T-shirts - Gerard mentioned the "Are you or have you ever been...." t-shirt
when I did the radio interview with him the other week. I don't ever
recall
seeing one either, but I guess I must have. Definately put me down for one
if it happens!

Rough Music - it is a good album, but no-one has mentioned Worry Beads -
possibly Rodney's best moment in the Aeroplanes. A great live one too.
Wond'ring Wild seems to borrow the apostrophe from Jethro Tull's Wond'ring
Aloud for some reason. Haven't played the album in a while, so will have
to
get off the Byrds Younger Than Yesterday trip that I currently seem to be
on
and give it another spin.

Should make it to Gerard's gig barring them deciding to ship mum back home
from hospital that day. I know PV2 - how are we all going to recognise
each
other? Red carnations are just so yesterday....

Hazel Winter has a gig coming up at the Folk House too. The new album
Death
Row Bride is officially out in October, but I wouldn't be surprised if its
available at that and the other gigs she's got coming up. I've just
received a pre-release copy and its excellent. The gig she is doing later
in September at Il Bordello with another ex-'plane Ruth Cochrane sounds
like
it'll be a belter too.

Hopefully see some of you on Friday.

  Hi all,

Wow - all this correspondance - great stuff. Shame I've missed most =
of it as my mum is in hospital and I've finally got a chance to log on.

T-shirts - Gerard mentioned the "Are you or have you ever been...." =
t-shirt when I did the radio interview with him the other week. I don't =
ever recall seeing one either, but I guess I must have. Definately put =
me down for one if it happens!

Rough Music - it is a good album, but no-one has mentioned Worry Beads =
- possibly Rodney's best moment in the Aeroplanes. A great live one =
too. Wond'ring Wild seems to borrow the apostrophe from Jethro Tull's =
Wond'ring Aloud for some reason. Haven't played the album in a while, =
so will have to get off the Byrds Younger Than Yesterday trip that I =
currently seem to be on and give it another spin.

Should make it to Gerard's gig barring them deciding to ship mum back =
home from hospital that day. I know PV2 - how are we all going to =
recognise each other? Red carnations are just so yesterday....

Hazel Winter has a gig coming up at the Folk House too. The new album =
Death Row Bride is officially out in October, but I wouldn't be =
surprised if its available at that and the other gigs she's got coming =
up. I've just received a pre-release copy and its excellent. The gig =
she is doing later in September at Il Bordello with another ex-'plane =
Ruth Cochrane sounds like it'll be a belter too.

Hopefully see some of you on Friday.

  PV1
