good call...but: What about the other model for the opening track? The one
that seems, on first listen, oddly unengaging & suffers by comparison with
the album's highlights ('Huh' or 'arriving') or on one occasion just plain
clumsy ('Coats') but then grows on you until it dawns that it is
deliberately there as a signpost to the mood of the whole record?
Philip - the model plane one = daughter movie!!! I'd love to be able to
tell you that you had heard it wrong & it was actually about oysters or
something but you're right this time....

Dear All,
I think we're going about this the wrong way. We should be designing the
best ever Blue Aeroplanes album which isn't the same as the 12 best tracks.
Track One
The incredible four-guitar riff one; Wojtek dancing like a road worker on
a pneumatic drill during an earthquake: that one. Great first line.
eg Detective Song
Track Two
The Gerard Langley lullaby lyrics/ melodic chorus by second guitarist.
You know, that other one.
eg Sugared Almond
Track Three
The acoustic chordy one with the sentimental use of Bm.
eg Love Come Round
Track Four
Loud, in your face; shouty chorus; use of phatic spoken English in
gorgeously literary context. That one.
loads of these
Track Five
An under-rated poem from the mid-twentieth-century recited to a wall of
sound. Or a trellis.
eg The Applicant
Track Six
The experimental one with the ethnic instrument or with the guy from the
session next door depping.
eg Anti-Pretty
Track Seven
Another incredible four-guitar riff one.
eg Jacket Hangs
Track Seven
It sounds like a diary written spontaneously (but some time ago); the
guitarists sound like they're playing chords they're making up
spontaneously (or remembering something they did some time ago).
eg the one about shipping the model plane and the Mexican kid
Track Eight
Strummy guitars, engaging mood, summer. A cynical grin?
eg Your Ages
Track Nine
Big, chromatic riff that you can never quite get right without listening
to the record again; big guitars; Wojtek's shirt's off. That one.
eg ...and Stones
Track Ten
Short, scrap-booky one which seems to have been recorded with one mike or
perhaps over the phone. You're beginning to question the exercise, and
then it suddenly stops.
loads of these: does that thing on Long Player count
Track Eleven
The cover version you really didn't expect.
eg Boy in the Bubble
Track Twelve
The long one you don't know why they bothered with, until later when you
realise it's the point of the whole thing.
eg Cat Scan History
Now, once we've sorted out the most popular title for each category we
have the track list from heaven.
