Overall, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed last night.
Was reasonably impressed with the opening band (Crayon). They had some
good
tunes, albeit quite simplistic - so by the end of the evening, a
four-piece
was always going to sound comparatively hollow compared to the
multi-layered
guitars of the Planes.
Almost fell asleep for the second band, although I thought the bass player
seemed pretty talented for one so young, and it was sooooo cute when what
were obviously his parents wandered up to the stage to congratulate him at
the end of the set.
I must admit that when the Aeroplanes came on I was somewhat taken aback
at
how old Gerard was looking (having only previously seen him in promo
prictures from the early 90's). But then they started playing and I forgot
everything (well - except maybe the words to Broken And Mended!).
The new stuff sounded pretty good - Art Star had me bouncing and singing
along with the chorus, and every time I recognised an intro it was another
heartstopping moment - Colour Me, Weightless, Yr Own World, ...And Stones,
Jacket Hangs.......
Jack Leaves is one of my favourite Aeroplanes tracks and rests even higher
in my esteem after hearing a fantastic live performance.
Last, but far from least, the guitar outro for Breaking In My Heart still
had my dancing in my seat for the duration of the drive home.
I would have liked to hear more of Rodney's stuff - and I believe he's
playing a set tonight.
The audience seemed reasonably receptive, if a little bit static - but I
put
a little bit of effort into my meagre efforts at dancing vaguely in rhythm
(somewhere near the front right, wearing a grey T-Shirt, if anyone else
out
there was there!), and had a really great time in return.
Went home clutching my new copy of Cavaliers, and still have a grin on my
face today.

Only 4 hours until the London gig.....
Only seen the Aeroplanes once before :)
Very, very, very excited.
Just wanted to let you all know!
